New Take on a Greek Classic: Antigone opens at Kennedy Theatre

The University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa’s Department of Theatre and Dance is proud to open its 53rd season with a reimagining of Sophocles’ classic, Antigone, adapted by Greg Banks and directed by Associate Professor of Theatre Mark Branner on the Kennedy Theatre Lawn. Performances will take place Friday, Sep. 16 & 23 at 5 p.m., Saturday, Sep. 17 & 24 and Sunday, Sep. 25 at 2 & 5 p.m.

Banks’ 50 minute one-act adaptation takes the classic Greek play and turns it into an explosive fast-paced thrill ride suitable for audience members from middle school to adult. Highlighting topics that are as relevant today as they were in ancient Greece, this more modern Antigone includes “the conflicts of family versus state, moral conviction versus national law and individual responsibility versus communal harmony.”

In addition to the modern twist, this production inaugurates the theme of Kennedy Theatre’s performances during the 2016/17 season: exploring venues, topics and performance styles that are “out of the box.” Many productions are currently planned to take place outside of the Kennedy Theatre stages. In the case of Antigone, an outdoor area adjacent to the theatre will host the stage, harkening back to the open air theatricals of Ancient Greece.

Advance SuperSaver tickets to Antigone are on sale at etickethawaii.com through September 2, 2016. Standard-price tickets to Antigone will go on sale Sep. 12: online at www.etickethawaii.com, by phone at (808) 944-2697, at official outlets, and at the Kennedy Theatre Box Office.
