In 2016, the Hawaii State Theatre Council and HittingTheStage.com joined forces to create a source of information about Hawaii's local theatres and the community of playwrights, directors, crewmembers, actors, volunteers, and audience that support it. Welcome to our new website!

Screwbuki Tour Kicks Off at The Leeward Theatre!

The Leeward Theatre is proud to announce the first production of 2017 for our 42nd Season: Screwbukiby On the Spot Improv. The production will be held in the new Leeward Theatre Alternate Space (formerly the orchestra classroom AM-101).

Screwbuki is innovative show which combines traditional Kabuki theatre with modern improv. Using kabuki voice, movement, character architypes, costume and make up with improvised dialog and storytelling, Screwbuki is one of the most requested improv show in the country.

On The Spot is thrilled to return to The Leeward Theatre at Leeward Community College for this special performance and kick off of their 2017 Screwbuki Tour.

About On the Spot Improv:

On The Spot Improv is Hawaii's longest running improv group. Established 2001, On the Spot Improv was created as a part of the Leeward Community College Theatre Program by its students. After graduating from Leeward Community College the group carried on performing and have been entertaining audiences all across the country with their unique brand of improvised theater. The group has been called one of the most innovative improv groups in the world by Chicago Improv Festival Executive Producer Jonathan Pitts for their unique approach to improvised theatre. Their signature style incorporates narrative storytelling, minimal dialog, and strong blocking to create cinematic images to tell complex stories.

On The Spot Improv made a name for themselves in the national improv community creating several original genre-esque formats, including but not limited to their improvised macabre show Tell Tale Dreadful, their improvised homage to the master of suspense Hitchcock, their playful 1920's live action silent movie show HUSH, alongside their fully improvised Kabuki style show Screwbuki.

About The Leeward Theatre:

Our ultimate goal here at The Leeward Theatre is to build community through live performance. The more of our community that is allowed to access our events the more likely it is for young people and other individuals to take action to improve their community. Creativity is life affirming – no matter the quality or value of what was created. It is a step toward life; toward adding something to the world that did not exist before. The Leeward Theatre exists as a place where creativity is practiced on a daily basis – where students, community members, and trained artists can engage with and empower one another. This is not just a building on a college campus - it is living breathing extension of the community. It is a place that has the power to inspire, the power to enlighten, and the power to educate.

The Leeward Theatre is undergoing a major renovation thanks to the generous support of the Legislature, the Governor, and the University of Hawaii. Although we have a reduced season, we're not completely dark. Come check out the fantastic offerings we have for our 42ND Season!
