ABOUT THE SHOW: “The Fantasticks” is a 1960 musical which tells an allegorical story concerning two neighboring fathers who trick their children, Luisa and Matt, into falling in love by pretending to feud. The fathers hire traveling actors to stage a mock abduction, so that Matt can heroically seem to save Luisa, ending the supposed feud. When the children discover the deception, they reject the arranged love match and separate. Each then gains disillusioning experiences of the real world, seen in parallel fantasy sequences. They return to each other bruised but enlightened, and they renew their vows with more maturity.

The show's original off-Broadway production ran a total of 42 years and 17,162 performances, making it the world's longest- running musical. It was awarded Tony Honors for Excellence in Theatre in 1991.

The role of El Gallo will be played by Eli K.M. Foster.

The Mute – age and gender flexible. Non-speaking; should be a good physical actor. Dance training helpful but not required.

Luisa – female, age 16. Naïve, innocent, lives in a make-believe world, does some growing up as the play goes on. A legit soprano comfortable singing B3 (below middle C) to C6 (C above treble clef).

Matt – male, age 20. More grown up than Luisa, but only a little. Romantic, a dreamer. A baritone comfortable singing A2 (A below low C) to F4 (F above middle C).

Hucklebee – Matt’s father, 30’s -50’s. Thinks of himself as practical, older and wiser. A baritone who sings from A2 (A below low C) to F4 (F above middle C).

Bellomy – Luisa’s father, 30’s -50’s. Thinks he knows what’s best for her. A baritone who sings from A2 (A below low C) to G4 (G above middle C).

Henry – male, 40’s -60’s. Overly theatrical and melodramatic actor, primarily a spoken role, may sing in ensemble.

Mortimer – male, 40’s -60’s. Henry’s sidekick, primarily a spoken role, may sing in ensemble.

DIRECTIONS TO THE SPACE: The KOA warehouse is located behind Kono’s restaurant on Hekili Street, across the street from Pali Lanes. The parking lot is undergoing major renovations, so the best option for parking is either on Hekili St, in the Whole Foods or Foodland parking lots, or underneath the Longs Parking Garage.

REHEARSALS: Rehearsals are tentatively set to begin Apr. 15, and will likely be split between Kailua and Town side spaces (TBD)
